Norton Elementary School. The goal was to encourage all Floridian fathers and male role models, including our selfless heroes that serve and protect our great country, to take an active role in their child's education. While visiting, Chancellor Lyons spoke with several students and encouraged them to have a great 2018-19 school year. Later that afternoon Chancellor Lyons served as the host for the Department of Education's Back-to-School Kick-Off and Mentoring Fair! Guests speakers General Counsel Matthew Mears and Bureau Chief of Standards and Instructional Support Kathy Nobles shared their experiences and the importance of mentoring. Find Yourself in a Book Contest. First Lady Scott was joined by K-12 Public Schools Chancellor Hershel Lyons and Lottery Secretary Jim Poppell. The award ceremony concludes the week-long celebration of reading and literacy in Florida's schools. Following the reading, staff from the ’s (FDOE) Division of Blind Services (DBS) led the students in interactive activities that provided them with an understanding of how individuals with varying visual impairments live, work and play. The students were later presented with copies of their names written in braille and the braille alphabet.
